New evidence on effects of green coffee beans in weight loss

ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? Scientists have just reported striking new evidence that green, or unroasted, coffee beans can produce a substantial decrease in body weight in a relatively short period of time.

In a study presented at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world's largest scientific society, Joe Vinson, Ph.D., and colleagues described how a group of overweight or obese people who consumed a fraction of an ounce of ground green coffee beans each day lost about 10 percent of their body weight.

"Based on our results, taking multiple capsules of green coffee extract a day -- while eating a low-fat, healthful diet and exercising regularly -- appears to be a safe, effective, inexpensive way to lose weight," Vinson said at the ACS meeting, being held in San Diego the week of March 26.? He is with the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania.

The study involved 16 overweight or obese people aged 22-26 years who took capsules of the extract or capsules containing a placebo, an inactive powder, for a total of 22 weeks. The subjects alternated between a low dose and a higher dose of the extract. The low dose consisted of 700 mg of the coffee extract, and the high dose was 1,050 mg. It was a so-called "cross-over" study in which people cycled through the two doses and the placebo, each for six weeks. Such studies have advantages because each person serves as his or her own "control," improving the chances of getting an accurate result.

All of the participants were monitored for their overall diet (calories, food eaten, etc.) and exercise over the study period. "Their calories, carbohydrates, fats and protein intake did not change during the study, nor did their exercise regimen change," Vinson said.

Participants lost an average of 17 pounds during the 22 weeks of the study. It included an average of a 10.5 percent decrease in overall body weight and a 16 percent decrease in body fat. Vinson noted that weight loss might have been significantly faster, except that participants received the placebo and the lower dose of green coffee extract for part of the study period.

Vinson pointed out that previous studies have shown weight loss with green coffee. But this was the first to use higher amounts of the coffee extract and the first to measure the response to various doses. Based on those studies, Vinson believes that green coffee beans' effects likely are due to a substance called chlorogenic acid that is present in unroasted coffee beans. Chlorogenic acid breaks down when coffee beans are roasted (usually at a temperature of 464-482 degrees Fahrenheit). Roasting gives coffee beans their distinctive color, aroma and flavor. Green coffee beans, in contrast, have little aroma and a slightly bitter taste.

State appeals judge's reinstatement of Flint mayor

Detroit? The state on Friday appealed a judge's ruling that stripped power from Flint's emergency manager and reinstated the mayor and the City Council.

The "sweeping and unprecedented" ruling by Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina "creates financial and administrative uncertainty for the city and its people," according to a brief filed in the state Court of Appeals by Attorney General Bill Schuette on behalf of Gov. Rick Snyder and Flint's financial review team.

Aquilina's finding Wednesday that the review team violated the Open Meetings Act was similar to an earlier finding by Ingham County Circuit Judge William Collette that the Detroit financial review team violated the same statute. Collette in February filed a permanent injunction barring members of the review team from meeting in secret.

Collette will hold a contempt hearing Thursday in Mason to decide whether state Treasurer Andy Dillon or other members of the Detroit review team violated his injunction by meeting in secret.

The court challenges in Detroit and Flint are among a number of assaults on Public Act 4, the emergency manager act. A separate lawsuit that claims the act violates the state Constitution, because it allows emergency managers to overrule elected official. Opponents have collected 230,000 signatures in an effort to get a repeal of the statute on the November election ballot.

Aquilina's order was in response to a lawsuit brought by the leader of a union that represents some Flint city employees.

The decision invalidated the appointment of Flint emergency manager Michael Brown, who was appointed late last year.

Under Public Act 4, emergency managers can make wide-ranging decisions to fix a municipality's or school district's financial situation. Emergency managers can sell off assets, void worker contracts and make decisions without city council or school board approval.

The cities of Pontiac, Ecorse and Benton Harbor and school districts in Detroit and Highland Park are among those under the direction of emergency managers.

In the age of information, physicians still are the most trusted source when parents confront serious illness

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Parents and adult caregivers of pediatric cancer patients prefer personal consultations with trusted health care providers over online sources for information about their child's illness, according to a University at Buffalo research study.

Despite the accessibility of online medical information, the UB study found that parents not only distrusted information found through the Internet, they often feared what types of information they might encounter.

"Respondents were telling us they were uncertain of the information online and that they were afraid of the unknown," says study co-author Elizabeth Gage, PhD, professor of community health and health behavior in the UB School of Public Health and Health Professions. "They didn't want to run into stories about 'the worst case scenario.'"

Gage, along with Christina Panagakis, a graduate student in sociology at UB, and colleagues at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, interviewed 41 parents of pediatric cancer patients in the U.S. to learn how caregivers use the Internet as an information source about their child's illness, its prognosis and potential treatment options.

The study, "The Devil You Know: Parental Online Information Seeking after a Pediatric Cancer Diagnosis," will appear in the May issue of Sociology of Health and Illness.

Beyond a distrust and fear of health-related Internet sites, the study's findings also suggest that online searching for information about an illness might vary between patients dealing with routine conditions and those faced with life-threatening problems.

"The likelihood of a patient going online might depend very much on context," Gage explains.

Previous studies looked at what Gage described as routine, contested or stigmatized illnesses, while her research contributes a piece of knowledge relative to severe pediatric illnesses.

"One of the reasons we were interested in exploring this issue is that so much research and media coverage had examined how the Internet was breaking down barriers between patients and caregivers and their physicians. But that wasn't that case in our study," Gage says. "Perhaps because of the severity of the diagnosis, parents and caregivers preferred to receive their information from sources other than the Internet."

The information-seeking behavior of parents and other caregivers appears to be influenced by the volume of available information, Gage says. Patients with routine illnesses might find minor details online that better inform their conversations with health care providers, but respondents in this study who were confronting a more serious diagnosis were overwhelmed by the often conflicting sources of online material.

"Families in our study did not know where to begin or how to sift through such a huge mound of information," Gage said.

Those who did look for information through the Internet tended to limit their searches to what they considered more credible sources, such as medical journals and hospital libraries, the study found.

"A lot of families used the Internet to establish connections with other families in a similar situation, as much for emotional support as for reasons to share medical information," Gage says. "However, many families ascribed a certain expert status upon these individuals, almost elevating the experience of what they call 'the veterans' to the same level as that of a trusted hospital-based site."

Aurora, Colorado (CNN) ? Tania Nava has one piece of advice for anyone seeking to come out of the shadows and pursue a path to U.S. citizenship: don?t do it.

She says her decision to become a legal citizen is one of the reasons her husband was murdered.

?I should?ve stayed illegal this whole time,? the 21-year old widow said. ?Jake would still be here.?

Jake Reyes-Neal, an American citizen, had traveled to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, last year to protect his wife as she waited for the long, complicated process to attain U.S. citizenship. Instead, Reyes-Neal ? who had never been to Mexico and didn?t speak Spanish ? became one of the thousands of homicide victims in Juarez as his family watched helplessly.

Nava and Reyes-Neal were high school sweethearts in Aurora, Colorado, and they got married at 18 after she gave birth to their son, Anthony. Nava decided that the next step to build her new life with her husband and child was to apply for U.S. citizenship.

Her parents had brought her to the United States illegally at the age of 7. Although Reyes-Neal was an American citizen, their marriage didn?t automatically give Nava legal status, so she still faced possible deportation.

Jake Reyes-Neal moved to Juarez, Mexico, with his son, Anthony, to protect his wife.

So the 18-year-old couple began navigating the intricate U.S. citizenship laws and regulations without the help of a costly lawyer. When Nava tried to apply for citizenship, she learned that federal law said she had to leave the United States and barred her from returning for up to 10 years because she had resided in the country illegally.

She could apply for a hardship waiver requesting that U.S. immigration officials not separate her from her husband and child, both American citizens. But she had to file that waiver in her birth country, and that meant packing up and moving to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Every year, more than 100,000 people travel to the U.S. consulate in Juarez to attain legal status. The consulate was set up to handle the permanent immigration visas years ago before the city became so violent.

Immigration attorney Shawn Mead calls the policy a perfect catch-22.

?It?s an impossible situation: They have the option of staying here unlawfully, not being able to get their residence now or ever, or going and living in the city of Juarez, a place where people do get murdered all the time,? Mead said.

A ray of hope in Mexico?s murder capital

Nava left her husband and young son in Aurora and attempted to live in her native Mexico, where she felt like a foreigner. She lived with her grandmother in Juarez, where more than 3,000 people were murdered in 2010. Last year, that number fell to just below 2,000 ? the first time the murder rate has dropped in four years.

?We were aware of everything,? Nava said of the dangers in Juarez. ?I mean, where we lived was a really bad neighborhood. We would drive by, and there were a couple shootings, and they had the bodies right there and everything.?

Meanwhile, back in Aurora, the separation was proving even more difficult for Anthony, and it wasn?t long before Reyes-Neal packed up and moved to Juarez to keep his family together. In a letter to the consulate, Jake pleaded for a hardship waiver allowing his wife to live in the United States while awaiting permanent legal residency.

?I am living with my wife and son in perilous and very dangerous conditions in Juarez, Mexico. We live with fear of our lives on a daily basis,? he wrote. ?As U.S Citizens, my son and I are facing extreme danger everyday we wake up in one of the most violent cities in the world.?

His plea went unanswered, and within six months, Reyes-Neal?s fear proved prophetic. He was shot more than 80 times outside the family?s home. Nava?s uncle was also killed in the attack. The motive was unclear, although the family suspects robbery.

?The last thing I heard was him saying, ?I don?t speak Spanish,? ?No hablo espa?ol,? and that?s it. And then I just heard the shots, and then I waited for a little bit because I was scared to go down there. I just went down there with Anthony and my grandma, and they were right there on the floor, on the ground,? Nava said.

Nava was covered in her husband?s blood before she realized she was still holding their 2-year-old son. That night still haunts her.

?It?s hard to sleep at night, because every time I think about them, the image pops in my head of them, they?re on the ground. And as much as I try to block it out of my head, I can?t,? she said, wiping away tears.

Today, Nava and her son live in Aurora, where she has a green card and is awaiting awaiting a path to permanent citizenship.

?The tragedy that this family has suffered is most unfortunate, most tragic,? said Alejandro Mayorkas, the director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

?What we can do within the current laws is develop process improvements that mitigate the dangers and hopefully avoid tragedies to the best of our abilities.?

Immigration Services has recently proposed a rule change aimed at reducing the time U.S. citizens are separated from their spouses and children during the process of becoming legal immigrants.

The proposal would streamline the process of obtaining hardship waivers by allowing U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to process certain waiver applications in the United States before an applicant departs for an immigrant visa interview with a U.S. consular officer abroad. In other words, it would reduce both the time the family spends apart and the time spent in harm?s way in places like Juarez.

Mayorkas says that as it stands, the immigration system punishes those who, like Nava, attempt to obey the law.

?I have been working in the immigration system now for almost two and a half years. As a federal prosecutor, I worked in enforcing immigration laws throughout the 1990s for approximately 12 years. Working in the system now, it is evident to me that the concern about a broken immigration system is indeed warranted and well grounded,? Mayorkas said.

The proposed rule change still has to go through several steps including a period of public comment before becoming official. But whenever it happens, it will be too late for families such as those of Jake Reyes-Neal.

Realtors, remodelers, builders, and other members of Atlanta?s housing industry are invited to attend the 34^th annual Spring Atlanta Home Show at the Cobb Galleria Centre for free on Friday, March 23 by showing their business cards at the entrance. The Spring Atlanta Home Show is scheduled for March 23-25. It?s Georgia?s largest home show, and is a SEMCO production.

?In today?s market, home buyers and sellers must educate themselves about home features and prices,? said Michael Schoppenhorst, Show director. ?The exhibitors and speakers at the Spring Atlanta Home Show know what buyers want in their homes and have great ideas about how sellers can make their homes stand out from the competition. Home builders, remodelers and landscape designers will benefit from seeing new products demonstrated and from the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the experts. They may want to bring their clients with them so they can made decisions together about home improvement projects.?

In addition to the exhibits, the Spring Atlanta Home Show will feature an exciting roster of speakers, including HGTV?s ?Kitchen Cousins?, Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri, who will entertain attendees on Saturday, March 24, with a behind-the-scenes look at their hit TV show. Show hours are 10 a.m. ? 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon ? 6 p.m. on Sunday.

NBC-TV will also be casting a new, national TV show. ?Home Transformers? will showcase America?s most exciting builders, decorators and craftsmen and some of them might be working right here in Atlanta. Casting directors will meet with potential participants on Friday and Saturday, March 23-24 from 1-6 p.m. The casting booth will be located in the Show?s exhibit hall and those who are interested should email in advance.

Other highlights include the See-Thru House, a Universal Design exhibit demonstrating how homeowners can age in place, a wine tasting benefitting Hope Atlanta and a recreation of a romantic Savannah streetscape.

The 2012 Spring Atlanta Home Show is presented by Window World, ConsultAHomePro.com, PMC Building Materials, Atlanta Home Improvement magazine, AM 750 and NOW 95.5 FM News/Talk WSB, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Buckhead Pizza Company, Hope Atlanta and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), and is part of the National Home & Garden Show Series presented by Dish.
