This is a bad place to ask the question. I don't know any posting members that are particularly anti-gay. I myself think that, with the bans on homosexual activity having been lifted, considering the matter is a waste of time. After all, my sexual activity is an ancillary and not particularly interesting part of my life, but I understand that many people think it's very important.

Do you think it could have something to do with those Victorian-era notions about sexuality? People don't necessarily follow Victorian ideals anymore, but it's taken so long to recover. Sexuality became very important during that time and it still is really.

Sexuality as a major focus of public policy is plausibly traced to the Victorian era. Sexuality as core of one's "identity" is fairly new, but has some core ideas about deviance and character that probably also trace to the Victorian era.

The mores against homosexuality, and which accord it a different social status are very old and common in the West. Even in pre-Christian Athens, where homosexuality was openly practiced (as was pederasty), it seems to have been considered at least by some substantial part of the population to be a secondary, almost hobby-like, relationship. The Near Eastern status of homosexuality, however, is far more interesting. The Greek attitude seems to be related to socio-politico-economic expectations about a man's relationships in the City, but I have no idea what motivated the peoples who wrote and received the strong attitudes in the Abrahamic religions.
